If you are heading to George Town in Malaysia you will most likely have heard about and seen photos of all the incredible street art gracing so many of the buildings. The hunt for the street art is a fun and free activity that can be done in one day or spaced over a few if you are hoping to miss the hottest parts of the day. Although the entire day seems like the hottest part in Penang! I hope you go on an adventure using my guide on the street art in George Town.
Even though we went out equipped with a map kindly given to us by our hostel, we still struggled to find a few of them. So it was rather fun to hunt around the small side streets hoping to come across the colourful pieces, we even managed to help a few other tourists who were having the same problems!
Throughout much of the city were these metal sculptures depicting old scenes from Penang.
STREET ART ON THE MAP
We attempted to hunt down all the pieces pin pointed on the map, but unfortunately missed out a few. Also, the more interactive pieces commissioned by Ernest Zacharevic drew very large crowds where you had to queue to be able to take a photo with them. I didn’t quite understand why so many people queued up to sit on the bicycle or motorbike and then covered up the whole painting behind with their body!
If you are a fan of cats or animals in art head to Armenian Street! There are a number of different murals all including cats in some way to raise awareness and to hopefully decrease the numbers of stray cats.
MORE STREET ART
The map we were given included about twenty different locations for the street art, however what I found most magical was how many more pieces there were! Nearly every building no matter how big or small had some kind of art painted on it. This guarantee that art adorned every building made me so much more aware of my surroundings as I didn’t want to miss anything special.
