Hello, it is my 26th birthday today! It is a bit of a strange one this year as I am literally over the other side of the world and away from my family. As we are working and saving at the moment for our road trip around New Zealand, Jack and I are keeping it pretty chill this year. But we are going out for a proper sit-down meal tonight for the first time since arriving here back in February and I can’t wait! I thought this would be a good opportunity to reveal a little more about myself with some facts that not a lot of people know. Some are a little embarrassing and some you might be surprised to discover…
1. I GOT UP TO GRADE 6 ON THE PIANO
This took quite a few years and a lot of practice! I think I started playing the piano when I was around 7/8, I remember playing in the school assembly and being terrified! I think I stopped taking lessons in the last few years of secondary school, although I wish I had continued to play for enjoyment. I still remember how to play well, but not quite how I used to be able to. Maybe something to get back into in the next few years!
2. I CAN BE PRETTY BOSSY
I am pretty laid back and polite with my friends and work colleagues, but when it comes to my family members and Jack I can be very bossy! I have gotten better over the years but I still find myself being demanding and bossy when I think I know best.
3. I USED TO BE PARTIALLY DEAF
I don’t really remember this as I think I was around 4/5 at the time. But apparently I was always turning the TV up really loud and taught myself to lip read as I couldn’t hear my dad’s low voice, then my parents took me to a doctor and I was fitted with grommets in my ears. And now I can hear fine! Yay! Do you remember the TV show ‘Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook’? Apparently I used to call it Conka Wonka instead because I couldn’t hear parts of the words!
4. I USED TO CREATE A CEREAL BOX BARRICADE AROUND MYSELF WHEN EATING BREAKFAST
I was quite a stroppy child when I was younger. Every morning without fail I would accumulate the cereal boxes around me so I didn’t have to watch anyone else eating their breakfast.
5. I VERY NEARLY STUDIED MATHS AT UNIVERSITY
Yeah, I can’t quite believe this now. I was really bad at maths in primary school, but as soon as I got to secondary school I actually became pretty good at it, I have no idea how! I ended up taking it as A Level, and had no clue what I wanted to do at uni. So logically I chose maths, even though I didn’t overly enjoy it. I got the results I needed to go to, but luckily I came to my senses at the last minute and decided to change courses.
6. I DROPPED OUT OF UNI AFTER THE FIRST YEAR
I changed courses from maths to interior design before starting uni, I don’t think you can get two courses more different than those! Interior design has always been a passion of mine, and I was told the course was very creative and focused on decorating interiors. What I didn’t expect to be doing was technical drawing. So I decided to finish after the first year, and I am still degree-less to this day. Something I am actually quite proud of.
7. I CAN FALL ASLEEP WITHIN FIVE MINUTES OF MY HEAD HITTING THE PILLOW
I feel very grateful to have this talent, I know a lot of people including Jack can lay there for up to an hour trying to get to sleep! I also can nap in the afternoon without it affecting me getting to sleep later on.
8. SOMEHOW I ENDED UP IN THE SCHOOL CHOIR EVEN THOUGH I’M AWFUL AT SINGING
I think I just tagged along with my best friend at lunch time to choir practice because I didn’t want to be ‘on my jub’. Did anyone else use that phrase at school?! I was terrified of having to spend lunchtime on my own, and as they didn’t hold auditions, I joined the choir. I’m not even remotely OK at singing, I think I ended up just mouthing the words so they didn’t hear my awful voice.
9. I PREFER FIZZY DRINKS ONCE THEY HAVE GONE A BIT FLAT
I can never drink a fizzy drink immediately after opening it, the fizzy bubbles just go up my nose and it’s too much for me! I much prefer to open a bottle, leave it a few days and then it is perfect to drink.
10. APPLES MAKE ME GASSY
I hope I’m not the only one…sadly apples are one of my favourite fruits, but I always get so bloated after eating them.
11. I FEEL SLEEPY MOST OF THE TIME
No matter what I’m doing or what time of the day it is, there is always a part of me that feels sleepy. I’m always in the mood to cosy up under a blanket and rest my eyes.
12. I HAVE NEVER KNOWN WHAT TO DO FOR MY JOB
Aside from those dream jobs you have when you are a child, for me it was either a fashion designer, surgeon or dancer, I have never had an inclining of what I would do as a career. After dropping out of uni I got a job doing admin at an antique auction, and from there I went into accounts. I now have a qualification in accounts, but it’s something I’ve kind of just fallen into because I’m good at it. I really envy those people that have a passion for something and can turn it into a career!
13. I’VE HAD MY TONSILS TAKEN OUT
I think I was around 9/10 at the time. The only part I really remember is being given loads of ice cream to eat after, luckily it is one of my favourite foods.
14. I USED TO HAVE A REALLY GOOD MEMORY BUT IT’S GONE DOWN HILL IN THE LAST FEW YEARS
When I was younger I used to be able to remember things in such detail, but now I lose memories so easily! If something jogs my memory then I will remember, but without that I hardly have detailed memories from the last year or so.
15. I HATE BEING THE CENTRE OF ATTENTION
If I’m in a group of people and someone starts asking me questions, I try and answer as quickly as possibly just so I can get the attention off me asap! I think this is also partly why I find it easier to talk to more outgoing people, because I am more comfortable asking questions and listening, instead of talking about myself.
16. I CAN’T SAY THE G IN WORDS LIKE SINGING, OR DINGHY
I think this has to be a result of me being partially deaf when I was younger! But when I say words with an ing on the end of them, eg singing, I say ‘sinin’ instead. I’ve had people who don’t know me get a little confused when I say words like this!
17. I USED TO BE ABLE TO WRITE WITH BOTH HANDS
I’ve been told by my parents when I was little I used to be able to write with both my left and right hands, but when I went to nursery school I was made to choose one hand. And I have been right handed ever since!
18. I HATE BREAKING RULES
I am awful at doing things that maybe I shouldn’t be doing, nothing illegal don’t worry, but any rules, no matter how small, I hate breaking. I definitely need to relax a little sometimes, and think what is the worst that can happen?!
19. I AM VERY GULLIBLE
I just like to think this means I am a very trusting person!
20. I OFTEN MERGE TWO WORDS TOGETHER BY ACCIDENT
This happens a lot. I will think in my head two words, like smelly or stinky, and instead of saying one or the other just a random jumble of the two comes out.
21. I TALK TOO FAST
Wow a lot of these have been about the way I talk, I’m obviously just not very good at speaking in general! Some days I speak completely fine, other days I speak so fast no one can understand me!
22. I PASSED MY DRIVING TEST FIRST TIME
I was surprised at the time to have passed, as during my test the examiner had to take hold of the wheel as she thought I was going to swerve into a lorry. Which I wasn’t btw.
23. I CAN JUST STARE INTO SPACE FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME
Is this strange?! I’ve always found that I can just sit or lay on my bed with no distractions and just think about life.
24. I CLIMBED MT SNOWDEN WHEN I WAS ABOUT 8 YEARS OLD
I have to say my fitness levels have declined drastically since then.
25. I USED TO BE SCARED OF DOGS, CATS AND MOST OTHER ANIMALS
Up until the age of maybe 14/15 I was scared of most animals, especially dogs. I used to cry if a dog came up to me! When I became friends with someone with five dogs, that fear slowly went away. And now I can’t wait to have a little animal family in a few years! Ideally a golden retriever and a few cats!
26. I LISTED DOWN AND MEMORISED ALL THE HARRY POTTER SPELLS AND THEIR MEANINGS
Bit of a Harry Potter nerd over here. For one of my teenage birthdays my dad even made me a real wand which I still treasure to this day.
